All children in Year R, 1 and 2 are entitled to receive free school meals. At Denmead Infants, our meals are provided by HC3S and the vast majority of our children opt for at least one school meal a week. HC3S produce a menu which has a three-weekly cycle and is available for parents/carers to view at www.hants.gov.uk/hc3s.
At different times through the school year we invite parents/carers to join their children to experience a ‘taster’ of the food provided each day- an event which is popular with children and adults alike!
Children can have a school meal every day or a combination of school meals and packed lunches. As meals are ordered in the classroom each morning, there is no need to let us know until the day. This provides families the freedom to tailor their choices to the individual needs and preferences of their child.
We know that a healthy lunch is essential for good learning and evidence shows:
- Children are better prepared for learning if they eat well
- Children make more progress if they have eaten the right nutritional lunch
- Eating lunch together is an important social occasion and the children learn vital social skills
HC3S is able to meet the needs of children with any food intolerances or allergies. All that you need to do is to fill out a Special Diets Request Form which can be obtained through the school office.
If you choose to provide a packed lunch for your child, why not visit www.nhs.uk/change4life/pages/healthy-lunchbox-picnic.aspx for a two week menu filled with nutritious ideas.
